It’s McAllen tradition: every time the temperature falls below 90 degrees, it’s sweater weather, and we head to the nearest patio to celebrate with an adult beverage or three. McAllen has its fair share of outdoor patios, and with fall hitting peak form, I’m highlighting the city’s best places for outdoor eating and drinking.
Roof 324 – 324 S. 17th Street, McAllen, TX
One of the trendiest hangouts in McAllen’s Entertainment District is Roof 324. Situated on the corner of 17th & Dallas, its rooftop deck gives bar goers the perfect vantage point for people watching. The open-air gathering space offers a sociable atmosphere with an unpretentious vibe, earning Roof 324 high scores when it comes to premium patios for drinking. If you’re not the outdoor type, Roof 324 also has a full bar and lounge downstairs, but seriously, who goes to a place called Roof 324 to be inside?
Snap-worthy: The well-lit rooftop deck at Roof 324 is ideal for pics, so bust out your smartphone and document your snap-worthy night out because you might not remember the next morning.
Mezzanine – 109 S. 17th Street, McAllen, TX
Mezzanine is a mainstay on 17th Street. The swanky downtown hot spot has been serving loyal patrons upscale cocktails since its opening, and the talented bartenders highlight their showmanship nightly. The draw for me is its outdoor space, which offers a bird’s eye view of the bustling Entertainment District. That being said, the move here is to start your night indoors. When you finally build up enough liquid courage to introduce yourself to the good-looking person you’ve been eyeing all night, offer to move the conversation outside because “you can’t hear well with the loud music” wink wink. It works every time, and with a little skill and some quality one-on-one time, 9 times out of 10 you up your chances at making a connection by at least 81%. You’re welcome.
Pro Tip: During peak times, it can get challenging to order a drink at Mezzanine if you’re not an experienced bar goer, so if you’re drinking beer or wine, head to the outdoor bar where there is little to no wait.
Infusions Eats & Drinks – 701 N. Main Street, McAllen, TX
For three years, Infusions has built its atmosphere, and reputation, around its craft cocktails and al fresco dining. All signs point to its outdoor space, which offers the ideal setting for after-office outings, girls’-night-out gatherings and hopeful Tinder dates. The historic home-turned-restaurant recently rolled out a new cocktail menu, with seasonal concoctions like the Pumpkin Old Fashioned and Cranberry Cinnamon Sour. I am a sucker for simple tequila drinks, so I opted for the Mexican Mule, which combines Herradura tequila, ginger beer and lime juice. Infusions covered patio has your back year-round, and if you read my article on the best brunches in McAllen, you know it leads the pack when it comes to outdoor day drinking and live music on the weekends.
Gamehaus Gastropub – 2109 W. Nolana Ave, McAllen, TX
If your fantasy is to have access to every sports contest in the western hemisphere while eating the best pub grub in town, then Gamehaus is the place for you. Its patio is decked out with flat screen TVs and a hi-definition projector to make your dreams of being armchair quarterback a reality. The outdoor space is outfitted with table tennis, shuffleboard and arcades, inviting you to settle your friendly disputes through the spirit of competition. Gamehaus is the undisputed champ when it comes to sports bars in McAllen, and now joins the ranks of best places for outdoor eating and drinking.
Copper Moon Bar & Grill – 110 S. 2nd Street, McAllen, TX
Good weather should be savored and celebrated, and that’s exactly how it goes down at Copper Moon. Its well-appointed backyard-patio vibe pairs well with its food and drink menu, offering a relaxed respite for lounging with friends. Try one of its famous Wagyu beef burgers or opt for something lighter like its shrimp street tacos. Patio dwellers will feel right at home in the spacious outside area, which is outfitted with misting fans and bulb lights to add to the ambiance. Copper Moon recently joined the brunch game, so if you’re looking for place to get in some quality patio day drinking, this is definitely a buzzworthy spot to check out.
McAllen is always in season, and it has its fair share of outdoor restaurants and bars to prove it. There are plenty of outdoor hangouts, but consider this your essential guide to the premium patio spots for daytime drinks or nighttime debauchery in town.
