The first question people ask when they find out I’m getting LASIK is: Are you excited?
It’s such a basic question, but I had to pause and think about it. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was five years old, and contact lenses since eighth grade, so I’ve become accustomed to life with corrective lenses.
Wearing contact lenses has become so much a part of my daily routine that it wasn’t a burden for me. After 21 years wearing contacts, it’s a part of life. Just like we put on shoes everyday to help you walk, I put on glasses or contacts to help me see. We don’t think about putting on shoes. It’s just something we do because we need them.
For the last four weeks, I have been out of contacts and only wearing glasses, per Dr. Shah’s orders. I realized how convenient contact lenses are. From doing physical tasks like running, to more basic things like tying my shoes, the glasses have become such a hassle. They keep slipping off. I started tensing the muscles in my face and wrinkling my nose to try and keep them on. I would do this even if they weren’t slipping, and I started getting headaches at times.
My answer to being excited about the LASIK procedure has changed in the last 4 weeks. It started as hesitant “yeah, I guess I am. I’m not sure what to expect, but I guess I’m looking forward to it,” and has changed to a definite “I can’t wait. I’m tired of wearing these glasses!”
The second question I typically get asked is: Are you scared?
This question is easier to answer. I wouldn’t say I’m scared, but I am nervous a little. It’s a natural reaction to something you’ve never experienced that will be life-changing. That being said, I wouldn’t want anyone else to perform the procedure than Dr. Shah and his team. It gets to a point where you just let go of any reservations and trust them because they’ve done it thousands of times.
I’d like to invite you to join in my experience. My LASIK procedure will be live streamed at Shah Eye Center on TheMonitor.com, Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 10:30AM. If you’ve been thinking about getting LASIK or if you want to know more, this is must-see TV!
