I have a love/hate relationship with springtime in South Texas. The weather is absolutely perfect, but as each day passes, we are one day closer to the scorching summer heat. My advice is to cherish each day, so pack some sunglasses and a light jacket and head to one of these killer events this spring.
(In chronological order)
MICHELADA FESTIVAL – March 26 – H.E.B. Park
What better way to shake your Sunday morning hangover than sampling the finest Micheladas north of the border? Trick question, there isn’t one. Toss in a souvenir cup, tickets to the RGV FC Toros’ home opener afterwards and a chance to experience the newest entertainment venue in South Texas, and you’ve got a recipe for success.
TASTE MCALLEN – March 30 – Oval Park at McAllen Convention Center
McAllen’s ultimate restaurant round-up returns to Oval Park at the McAllen Convention Center. Fest-goers can taste test 30 of the regions best restaurants in one place while sipping on their favorite adult beverages. Tickets can be purchased here.
Pro-Tip: Stop by the RGV Chef Association’s fire pit where the area’s top chefs showcase the finest outdoor cooking you’ve ever seen.
RGV FC TOROS – March 26 – H.E.B. Park
The official home opener for the RGV FC Toros is an event in itself, but I’m suggesting making it to any home game this season. The second-year USL franchise is playing in Texas’ premiere soccer venue south of San Antonio, and that’s reason enough to get out of the house. Whether you like soccer or not, you can always count on the booze-filled vibe of a live soccer match to deliver, which is a win no matter how you look at it.
OUT OF THIS WORLD UFO FESTIVAL – March 31 – Edinburg, TX
Whether you’re a believer or not, you are not alone. The annual UFO Festival & Conference welcomes all terrestrials. The event kicks off on Friday, March 31st with a free festival featuring a costume contest, games, rides and various other-worldly activities. For those interested in a deeper look into the skies, the fun continues Saturday at the Renaissance Conference Center, where some of the nation’s top UFO experts speak about ET’s and UFO’s. Tickets for Saturday’s conference can be purchased here.
MUSIC AFTER HOURS – April 7 – Archer Park
The perennial outdoor concert series and craft fair is a solid reason to get out of the house on Friday nights. The family friendly event happens every first Friday of the month at Archer Park, and it’s the perfect way to support local musicians and crafters.
BREW-SEUM – April 4-9 – McAllen, TX
What started out as a one-night fundraising event in 2009 for the International Museum of Arts and Sciences has become a weeklong celebration of craft beer. Brew-seum is without a doubt the number one event for people who love beer, and with nightly events each day of the week, there’s no reason you can’t make it out to McAllen’s favorite craft brew event. Check out the full lineup of festivities here.
SUNSET LIVE – April 8 – Oval Park at the McAllen Convention Center
Oval Park is tailor made for events like the Sunset Live Outdoor Concert Series, and music lovers echo that statement by showing up in droves. Every second Saturday from April through December, the free concert series showcases touring music acts in a laidback outdoor park vibe. The production is first class, and the beer is cold. Pair that up with food trucks and live music, and you’ve got yourself a nice little date night.
4th ANNUAL SELENA TRIBUTE NIGHT – April 13 – Suerte Bar & Grill
Selena has an extremely loyal fan base in South Texas, and you can rub shoulders with them and sing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” as much as your little heart desires at the 4th Annual Selena Tribute Night. The back-by-popular-demand tribute night features Selena look-a-like and karaoke contests. Drink specials and a room full of Selena’s, count me in!
SIZZLING IN THE TROPICS – April 22 – McAllen Food Park
The McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s Annual BBQ Cook-Off is cooking up enough barbecue, booze and live music to give you the meat sweats in the best possible way. Carnivores can sample all-you-can-eat smoked meats and grilled goodies for $20, and the ticket price also includes beer. You might be in a meat coma for the rest of the day, but that’s exactly what Sunday’s are for.
SOUTH TEXAS COMIC CON – April 28-30 – McAllen Convention Center
South Texas Comic Con is one of those events that continuously improve every year. Nerd out and meet oddball personalities from TV, comic books and fantasy worlds at this three-day event. The highlight for me at comic con is the costumes though. Comic Con makes it completely acceptable to dress in full-on theater quality costumes without having to wait for Halloween. For appearance schedules and more info, visit the website.
MCALLEN FOOD PARK FUN – McAllen Food Park
The love for food trucks is real at the McAllen Food Park, and events like Food Park Unplugged and Karaoke Night give mobile eatery enthusiasts two more reasons to visit the RGV’s original food truck park. Every 3rd Friday of the month, the park hosts Food Park Unplugged, where food truck goers can listen to live, acoustic music while scarfing down the local delicacies. If you’re brave enough to get behind the mic, then Karaoke Night at the food park is for you. Every 4th Friday of the month, karaoke lovers line up to belt out their favorite tunes.
Pro Tip: If you want to sing, arrive early to sign up. The waitlist can get long.
